The Chiefs and people of the Upper West Region have appealed to President-elect John Dramani Mahama to retain Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin as Speaker of Parliament in the next administration.
In a statement signed by Gbankor Naa Jamaa Matarah II on behalf of the Kaleo Traditional Council and the region’s traditional authorities, they praised Speaker Bagbin for his exceptional leadership, courage in adversity, and his transformational approach to governance.
The statement highlighted Bagbin’s ability to steer the affairs of a historic hung Parliament, noting his diplomacy and strategic leadership in maintaining legislative balance. It also commended his efforts to promote Ghanaian and African cultural heritage through his symbolic dress code, which has become a hallmark of his tenure.
Bagbin’s relationship with President-elect Mahama, the chiefs noted, is built on mutual respect and decades of collaboration within the NDC and in Parliament.
They believe retaining him as Speaker would ensure continuity in governance and align with Mahama’s campaign promise to “reset Ghana.”
“With the NDC securing a strong majority in Parliament, this is a unique opportunity to build on progress and address the nation’s challenges. Retaining Speaker Bagbin would be a step in the right direction,” the statement concluded.
The call from the chiefs underscores growing support for Bagbin’s continued leadership in Parliament as the country looks forward to the next phase of governance under the NDC administration.
