Urban Road suspends drain project over Bugri Naabu’s outburst

The Urban Road department in the Northern region has ordered the contractor they engaged to undertake a project in Tamale to stop work after the Northern regional chairman of the NPP Daniel Bugri Naabu questioned the political affiliation of the contractor.

A youth group identified with the NPP in Tamale on Tuesday chased away workers of the local construction firm Nusang Ghana Limited contracted to build a storm drain and fix a gutter at Guman after some regional executives accused the Municipal Chief Executive, Mariam Iddrisu, of awarding the contract to an NDC contractor.

Confirming the development to Starr News, Mr. Bugri Naabu said he sanctioned the attack on the contractors, adding that the situation would have been fatal if he were in Tamale during the incident.

According to Bugri Naabu, the NPP youth “did a good job” by chasing away the contractor.

“I sanctioned it,” Bugri Naabu said in an interview on Starr Today Tuesday, adding “The guy who awarded the contract to them, where is their award letter…when our own people have no jobs, NDC people are working all over the place in the region.”

Commenting on the development, the Northern regional director of Urban Road Ing. Kwasi Darko told Francis Abban on the Morning Starr Wednesday that the project has been suspended after the row.

“We engaged a contractor who was already on the ground to assist us with the project. We are just engaging the contractor on a minor activity to save lives so this is not the main project. I would meet with stakeholders and revert with needed information required. Just to allow tempers to calm down the project has been stopped.

Meanwhile, political scientist Abbas Mohammed has called on the residents of Tamale to make their voices heard on the matter by speaking up against it.

” The residents must also speak up against such actions. That is also another strong way of making a political statement. They speak up and let the authorities know that they are against such conducts. This is a regional chairman and I don’t know why he did what he has done. The action was really abnormal”.
