Member of the New Patriotic Party [NPP] communication team, Mr. Richard Ahiagbah has said the recent increment on electricity tariffs is in the right direction.
In a statement copied to Peacefmonline.com he explained that Nana Akufo-Addo led government has kept faith with Ghanaians relative to utility tariffs increases unlike the NDC administration that, increased utility prices on Ghanaians a combined 227.1% between 2010 and 2015.
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission [PURC] announced an 11.7 percent upward electricity tariff adjustment.
The commission explained that, “the key objective of the tariff review was to sustain the financial viability of utility service providers as well as ensuring the delivery of quality service to consumers.”
However, the opposition NDC has criticized government for its decision to increase electricity tariff But Mr. Ahiagbah believes that the recent increase in utility tariff translates into a net utility tariff reduction of 6.33% in 3years.
“Government is focused on doing all of it to keep tariffs low for Ghanaians by ensuring that demand for tariff increases are justified and negotiated based on high operational efficiency standards,” the statement said.

The Nana Akufo-Addo led government has kept faith with Ghanaians relative to utility tariffs increases unlike the NDC administration that, increased utility prices on Ghanaians a combined 227.1% between 2010 and 2015.
The NPP government reduced utility tariffs by 17.5 percent on consumers in 2018.
The reduction followed a thorough efficiency audit to minimize the cost of utility companies' inefficiencies to electricity consumers.
The government maintains its position that everything must be done to protect the interests of Ghanaian consumers of electricity hence the determination to push utility companies to become efficient and effective across board.
The recent increase in utility tariff by some 11.17% translates into a net utility tariff reduction of 6.33% in 3years.
Government is focused on doing all of it to keep tariffs low for Ghanaians by ensuring that demand for tariff increases are justified and negotiated based on high operational efficiency standards.
Clearly, NDC administration under Mahama failed to take the plight of Ghanaians into account, hence it agreed to increase utility tariffs a combined 227.1 % in just 5 years.
As promised, and being delivered, the Nana Akufo-Addo led government will continue to act as a fair tariff advocate for Ghanaians.
NDC increased tariffs in:
2010 by 89%
2013 by 78.9%
2015 by 59.2%
NPP tariffs adjustment in
2018 by -17.5%
2019 by +11.17%
Tariff Adjustment Analysis:
1. Under NDC:
89%+78.9%+59.2% =227.1%
Therefore, in 5 years, NDC increased utility tariffs by 227.1% on Ghanaians
2. Under NPP -17.5% + 11.17% = 6.33% being net Reduction.
Therefore, in 3years, NPP decreased utility tariffs by 6.33%..
