Tensions between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) boiled into violence on Saturday, May 18, as a dispute over voter registration in a local community turned ugly.

The incident occurred at the Ga South electoral office registration center where supporters of both parties had gathered to participate in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

A disagreement over the eligibility of a minor to register as a voter escalated into a physical confrontation, with both sides trading blows and hurling insults.

It is reported that the situation quickly spiralled out of control, with party loyalists using sticks, stones, and other objects as weapons. Several people were injured, and vehicles were damaged in the ensuing melee.

Police officers were deployed to the scene to restore order, and the registration center was temporarily closed. The incident has raised concerns about the potential for further violence in the lead-up to the elections.

Leaders from both parties have condemned the violence and called for calm, but the incident has highlighted the deep-seated tensions between the NDC and NPP.

The Electoral Commission has urged all parties to prioritize peace and respect the democratic process.
