Violent clash erupts at Abuakwa

Abuakwa, (Ash), June 16, GNA - A violent communal clash between the youth of Boaso and Zongo, both suburbs of Abuakwa in the Atwima District over the disposal of wastewater has led to the destruction of houses and other personal property.

Police reinforcement from Kumasi dispatched to the town to calm down the situation had to throw several rounds of tear gas to prevent the rampaging youths from further attacks and destruction. In the process, residents including school children had to run helter-skelter for their dear lives The police have arrested and placed in custody 17 persons for their alleged involvement in the violent disturbances.

A police source told the GNA at Abuakwa that the clashes erupted over a misunderstanding over the disposal of wastewater from a bathhouse of the residents of Boaso. It said residents at the Zongo were against the throwing of the wastewater onto their neighbourhood by the residents of Boaso and therefore attacked them resulting in the clash.

According to the Police source, further investigations were being conducted into the incident. It said the Police were still patrolling the communities to ensure law and order, adding that, calm had returned to the town following the police presence.
