Volta NDC dumped

A group calling itself Volta Caucus, which is affiliated to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed disappointment in the party for failing to elect people from the Volta Region to key positions.

The group shared the sentiments of Anita Desooso, a defeated National Organiser aspirant that not electing anybody from the Volta Region, the stronghold of the NDC, to any of the party’s executive national positions was not good enough.

Prior to the declaration of results by the Electoral Commission (EC) at the Trade Fair Centre, Accra, the outgoing Vice Chairman of the NDC and former Women’s Organiser hinted that all Voltarians vying for key positions had lost.

She said “there is no Voltarian in the game.”

Voltarians, who vied for key positions include Dan Abodakpi for Chairman, Koku Anyidoho for General Secretary and Fred Agbenyo for Communication officer and herself, among others, lost the elections.

Those who vied for deputy positions won the elections.

The Volta Region is the stronghold of the NDC and many believed that getting at least one of the aspirants from the region to occupy a key position in the party would be appreciated by the people.

But about 9,000 delegates, who voted during the 9th National Delegates Conference, rejected most of the Voltarians.

Ms Desooso disclosed that should the party and new executives find a way to “massage” the outcome of the elections, the defeat of the Voltarians might affect the party, adding that the “NDC must think about it.”

Accusation Against Mahama

The group, in a statement signed by its Secretary, Edem Avorga, accused former President Mahama, who is vying for the NDC flagbearership position, of masterminding the defeat of aspirants from the Volta Region who vied for key positions.

“The plot was rife among members of the party prior to the congress, but we ignored it only for it to be confirmed midway to the congress.

It made reference to attempts by some people to ‘disqualify’ one Elikem Kototo, who filed nomination to vie for National Youth Organiser position without any substantial reason.

They also alleged that as part of Mr. Mahama’s grand scheme to hijack the NDC, he orchestrated to get the Volta Caucus from the national front.

“He believes that would reduce the relevance of the founder of our party, who is a Voltarian. Furthermore, former President Mahama allegedly pushed to get his favourites elected to strategic national positions so he can hijack the NDC for many years.”

“Mr. Mahama, the flagbearer hopeful, supported the campaign of all aspirants who contested against anybody from the Volta Region, with the likes of Sammy Gyamfi, Akamba and others benefiting.

“The situation is a sad reality that is detrimental to the unity and fortunes of the NDC for 2020 and beyond,” they opined.
