Vote for competence not because I’m Muslim – Bawumia

The NPP vice presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called on people in the Zongo communities to vote for Nana Akufo-Addo during the elections, because the NPP presidential ticket is competent.

According to him, Ghanaians in the Zongos must not vote for him because he is a Muslim.

Speaking at the Palace of the Kumasi Sarkin Zongo (Zongo Chief), Sultan Umar Farouk Saeed, at a meeting with Zongo Chiefs in Kumasi, Dr. Bawumia made the point that no matter one’s make-up and orientation, the most critical factor which should guide Ghanaians as they go to the polls this year, is who can competently steer the affairs of the state and create jobs and wealth for the people of Ghana and was of no doubt that the NPP and its presidential ticket of Nana Akufo-Addo and himself, had demonstrated and proven to be more competent for the serious job of transforming Ghana.

“Others come to you or will come to you and say because we are also from the Zongo or the North, vote for them. I am also from the North, I am also from the Zongo and I am also a Muslim, but I won’t say vote for Nana Akufo-Addo just because I am a Muslim or from the North or Zongo because after all, what is the point if I am all these and at the end of the day, I lack the competence to make your lives better? What gain does one get if you have a Northern President or Zongo President and at the end of the day, you don’t have a job and have to struggle to survive with the prevailing high cost of living?” he asked.

Citing the current John Mahama-NDC government as a typical case study, Dr. Bawumia reminded the Zongo Chiefs and the people of the Zongos of how the NDC and John Mahama came round asking the people to vote for Mahama because he is from the North, but how that same government had acted against the people of the North and brought unbearable hardships through its wanton corruption and incompetence.

Pointing to the SADA loot and collapse of various social intervention schemes which hitherto provided relief to the millions of poor and deprived people across the country and in the North, Dr Bawumia noted that it was time for the people of Ghana to take “our destinies back and seek first and foremost, competence and honest leadership and not associations which bring little benefit.”

The NPP Vice-Presidential candidate appealed to Ghanaians not to deny Nana Akufo-Addo the chance to develop and transform Ghana for the third time, noting that “eight years of incompetence, corruption and ‘Wahala’ is enough, it is time to bring in Nana Akufo-Addo to work for all of us”.

Dr. Bawumia’s visit to Kumasi comes after similar visits to the Obuasi East and West Constituencies in the Ashanti region, Techiman North and South and the Kintampo North and South Constituencies in the Brong Ahafo region, the Bolgatanga East and Bolgatanga Central Constituencies in the Upper East region, the Wa Central Constituency in the Upper West region and the four Tamale Constituencies of Tamale Central, Tamale North, Tamale South and Sagnarigu, all focused on visiting Zongo Communities and spreading the NPP’s message of jobs and transformation.
