World Vision Ghana’s (WVG) Unlock Literacy program aimed at increasing reading performance among children in primary school has made a massive impact in the Upper Denkyira West District in the Central Region.

As a result of the project, the percentage of student who could read with fluency and comprehension in lower primary stood at 2.1 per cent, an improvement of the baseline survey, which was 0.5 per cent.

Mr Irvine Yaw Aboagye, the Area Programme Manager of WVG in the District, who made this known during a visit to the area, said the project had 124 teachers from 32 schools in the District.

''Our focus is to strengthen community participation in education especially conducting of reading and child protection competitions,'' Mr Aboagye said.

He said the project’s approach of working hand-in-hand with the District Education Office as well as the committees on improving education had contributed to the success of the initiative.

Mr. Robert Kwamina Assomaning, Chief Director of Education in Upper Denkyira West, commended WVG for the support to the district noting that the project would help improve education in the area.

''Interventions from World Vision have helped improved learning in the district but we face pertinent challenges, which hindered our efforts,'' he said.

Mr Asomaning mentioned that, the inability to retain teachers in the District had widened the teacher to student gap as few teachers have to take multiple responsibilities.

He urged government to come to their aid in the shortest possible time to help bridge the gap in the District, which was one of the best performing schools in the 2018 Basic Education Certificate Examination.
