“Students enjoying free SHS are being bitten by mosquitoes because there is no school building to sit in to learn; they are getting pregnant here and there because when their track ends and they go home, they have nothing to do; that is why we were advocating for infrastructure,” the deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Otokunor said.

Peter Otokunor was reacting to recent comments made by President Akufo-Addo regarding the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

The President, while addressing staff and students of the Bolgatanga SHS, said: "this policy has come to stay. I know that there are people in this country who don't want this policy, who have been campaigning against this policy and they are dreaming that they are going to come back to power to cancel the policy."

His remarks has generated a lot of reactions especially from the opposition NDC who feel President Akufo-Addo’s attack on John Mahama is unnecessary.

Adding his voice to the debate in an interview on Neat FM, Otokunor feels ‘Akufo-Addo has lost touch’ with issues because Mahama and the NDC have never opposed the Free SHS policy.

“He is not in touch with the reality in this country; he is completely out of touch because NDC has continuously indicated that we will review the free SHS policy. Never had we said we were going to scrap it . . . so if those around Akufo-Addo will not wake him up from his slumber, we will . . . " he said.
