Walewale MP condemns military brutality, vows to seek justice for victims

Walewale MP, Dr. Kabiru Mahama Walewale MP, Dr. Kabiru Mahama

Dr. Kabiru Mahama, the Member of Parliament for Walewale, has strongly condemned the recent military brutality in his constituency, describing it as “unprovoked violence against civilians” and pledging his full support to the victims of the attack.

“I unreservedly condemn the military brutality against innocent residents of Walewale,” Dr. Mahama stated in a public address.

“There is no justification whatsoever for the unprovoked violence against civilians.” The MP emphasized the importance of safeguarding civilian spaces from military interventions, noting that such actions should only be taken when situations escalate beyond control.

The incident, which occurred in Walewale, a town in the North East Region of Ghana, left dozens of residents injured.

Witnesses described a harrowing scene where armed soldiers stormed the area, forcing people to lie face down before brutally beating them with wire rods. Others were reportedly made to roll on the ground and were tortured with objects described as mesh wires. Many of the victims suffered severe injuries, including lacerations and fractures, with some requiring treatment from a traditional bone specialist.

The violence, which unfolded without clear provocation, has sparked outrage across the community.

The MP’s call for accountability is echoed by many who demand justice for the victims. “The military command owes the victims an unqualified apology for these excesses,” Dr. Mahama declared.

He also reassured the community, stating, “I will liaise with the affected persons to ascertain the scale of injuries and determine the next line of action to ensure justice for the victims.”

The exact motive behind the military crackdown remains unclear. However, police sources suggest the violence may be linked to the recent burning of a truck transporting vegetables from Missiga to Kumasi, an incident tied to the ongoing Bawku conflict.

While this connection has yet to be confirmed, it has left the people of Walewale anxious and uncertain about the reasons for the aggressive military presence in their town.

Dr. Mahama, while condemning the military’s actions, urged the people of Walewale to remain calm and to continue abiding by the law.

“I also urge the people of Walewale to continue respecting the law and to use lawful means to address grievances,” he said.

His call for a peaceful resolution comes at a time of heightened tension, as residents struggle to make sense of the violence that has shaken their community.
