President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo addressed the 79th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on Wednesday, September 25, 2024.

Though the address to the General Assembly was his last, as he indicated, the demonstration by some Ghanaians at the UN Headquarters in the United States is making news headlines rather than the pertinent issues the President touched on.

Akufo-Addo, after stating how proud he was of his government and enumerating his achievements as president, had some tough words for the United Nations and the West.

The president lambasted the UN over the composition of the Security Council, saying, "The structure of the UN Security Council reflects a world that no longer exists."

He added, “Its failure to act in times of crisis raises a difficult question: what is the purpose of the Security Council if it cannot intervene when the world needs it most?”

Akufo-Addo also criticised the West for the lack of development of the African Continent.

The president also bemoaned the military coups in sub-Saharan Africa.

He also touched on the upcoming General Elections in Ghana, promising that the election would be free, fair, and transparent.
