The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, struggled to hold back tears during the final rites of the late Akyempimhene, Oheneba Adusei Poku, with whom he reportedly shared a close bond.
A video shared by The Asante Nation captured the emotional moment when the Asantehene, despite his efforts, could not restrain his tears.
In a poignant scene, the king—overcome with grief—still honoured the occasion by dancing gracefully on a palanquin as tears streamed down his face. His kinsmen cheered him on, providing support during the solemn moment.
At one point, the Asantehene was handed a black cloth by his subjects, which he used to wipe away his tears.
The funeral attracted prominent dignitaries, including the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo; former President John Agyekum Kufuor; and other government officials.
Oheneba Adusei Poku’s interment is scheduled for tonight, bringing to a close the elaborate funeral rites that have underscored the cultural and historical significance of his role within Asanteman.
The late Akyempimhene was the son of the 15th Asantehene, Otumfuo Opoku Ware II.
He was the eldest of five children and the only male child born to Otumfuo Opoku Ware II.
