President-elect John Dramani Mahama has sent a delegation to the Manhyia Palace to officially inform the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, of his victory in the December 7 presidential election.

The delegation was led by Hon. Samuel Sarpong, a former Ashanti Regional Minister.

Following the close of the 2024 presidential and parliamentary polls on December 7, Vice-President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, officially conceded defeat to his main opponent, John Dramani Mahama, in Ghana’s 2024 Presidential Election. This concession was made even before the Electoral Commission officially declared the results.

Dr. Bawumia announced his decision at a press conference on Sunday, December 8, 2024, emphasizing that it was motivated by a desire to reduce tension and preserve national peace.

Ahead of the December 7 elections, John Mahama visited the Asantehene on Tuesday, December 3, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

The former president was accompanied by former government appointees from the NDC, including former Minister of Justice Betty Mould Iddrisu, former Mayor of Kumasi Kojo Bonsu, and former Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Akwasi Oppong-Fosu, among others.

Mr. Mahama assured the people of the Ashanti region of his commitment to developing the region and positioning it as a thriving second-largest city in the country.

He emphasized his connection to Manhyia, referring to it as his home, and promised to complete all abandoned projects and initiate new ones upon returning to power.
“I consider Manhyia my home, and you know me. When I return to power, I will ensure that I complete all projects they have abandoned, as well as those they will leave for us,” he said.

During his address, Mr. Mahama highlighted Kumasi’s status as the second-largest city and stressed its need for equal development attention. He cited his previous efforts to distribute development projects fairly and mentioned specific unfinished initiatives, including the Afari Military Hospital, phase two of the Kejetia market, and phase two of the Kumasi Airport.

He also reminded the Asantehene of advice given to him to share the NDC’s success stories and outline his achievements as President, along with his plans for the country upon returning to office.

“I remember you once advised me to tell the people what I have done and what I intend to do. So, the last time I was here, I mentioned the things we have accomplished in this region.

“We completed some projects, while others remained unfinished before we left office. We hoped the government that succeeded us would complete them. However, for eight years, these projects were abandoned, including the Afari Military Hospital and phase two of the Kejetia market, for which we had already secured funding,” he said.
