Traders from Kantamanto Market, who were affected by the devastating fire on January 2, 2025, confronted and chased away several Chinese nationals from the scene of the incident.
Eyewitnesses reported that three Chinese nationals arrived at the site with heavy machinery, including excavators, in what appeared to be an attempt to demolish the area after the fire.
In a video circulating online, traders, still reeling from the disaster and assessing their losses, grew visibly angry at the presence of the Chinese nationals.
They gathered in large numbers, hooting and shaming them as they chased them away from the scene.
Fearing for their safety, the Chinese nationals quickly fled the area.
Meanwhile, displaced traders at Kantamanto Market have already begun efforts to rebuild their stalls, just days after the fire destroyed much of the market.
Videos show traders unloading wood from trucks to reconstruct their businesses.
The fire, which broke out at dawn on Thursday, January 2, 2024, claimed one life and left 14 others seriously injured.
It ravaged large sections of the market, affecting over 30,000 traders and destroying more than 7,000 shops.
Per reports, efforts to combat the fire were hindered by water shortages and logistical challenges, which prolonged the situation.
