A taskforce of the National Association of Small-Scale Miners, on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, seized equipment of illegal miners (galamseyers) on the River Mankran, in the Ahafo Ano South West District in the Ashanti Region.

The seizure was during an operation by an anti-galamsey taskforce of the small-scale miners in the district.

A video of the operation shows the taskforce burning some of the galamsey equipment on the River Mankran.

The taskforce told reporters after the operation that illegal miners took to their heels and fled the scene, leaving behind their working equipment on the river.

They explained that they were left with no option than to burn some of the mining machines on the River Mankran, adding that they retrieved water pumping machines, motors, tanks, and others as evidence.

The miners’ association told reporters that they will continue to hunt illegal miners, especially those working on rivers and other water bodies, and ensure they rid them of the system.

They said that they will not stand by and allow illegal miners to destroy the environment, and that their task force will patrol all mining areas, arrest, and deal with the perpetrators.
