Some youth of Sefwi Akontombra in the Western North Region on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, stormed an illegal mining site, accosted persons involved in illegal mining activities otherwise known as galamsey.
In a video shared on X by a user named Kalyjay, the youth numbering more than ten engaged the illegal miners in a scuffle.
Despite the illegal miners being armed, the youth were able to overpower them. They took their firearms and ordered the group of illegal miners to follow them to the police station.
Discussions and campaigns against illegal mining activities (galamsey) resurfaced in the country some few weeks ago when the Ghana Water Limited disclosed that galamsey activities and the subsequent pollution of the Pra River have made it impossible to supply quality water to residents in Cape Coast and its surrounding areas in the Central Region.
Many organisations and associations have since joined the campaign, mounting pressure on the government to ban illegal mining.
They have threatened to take action if the government fails to act.
