After being deposed in a coup d'état while on a peace-making mission in Hanoi, Vietnam, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah forced himself into exile in neighbouring Guinea-Conakry in February 1966.

He left behind a 3-person presidential commission in charge of the country, which was later taken over by the National Liberation Council (NLC) under military rule.

Dr. Nkrumah later died in Romania in 1972, with records stating that no family member was by his side during the months when he battled ill health.

However, in 1972, Nkrumah’s wife, Fathia Nkrumah, arrived in Ghana for resettlement with their three children, Samia, Gamel, and Sekou Nkrumah.

A video of their arrival recently surfaced on social media, showing them being greeted by dozens at the airport.

The video showed Fathia Nkrumah overcome with emotions after returning to the country where she was once a first lady alongside Dr. Nkrumah who was president and prime minister.

She was also met by some close allies and members of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP), of which Dr. Nkrumah was the founder.
