Watchdog Committee for Makola

The Accra Central District Co-ordinating Committee is to form 100-man strong watchdog committee to beef up security to curb the rampant stealing in the 31st Makola Market and its environs.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in conjunction with the Police and various market associations would provide logistics and support the youth that would be engaged, screened and trained by the Police.

Police Chief Superintendent Kofi Boakye, Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, said this at the opening of a day's seminar on Thursday, geared towards the formation of the committee in the market.

"These efforts are directed at reducing crime in the markets in Accra as part of government's commitment," and called on the market women to embrace it.

Nana Aku-Brakatu Brempong II, President of the Ghana Used Clothes Dealers Association, said the stakeholders would pay the allowances of the committee, as well as their insurance cover, to motivate them to perform effectively.

Nana Brempong, who is also the Interim Chairman of the Committee, said the committee would levy the market women 10,000 cedis monthly.

Police Chief Superintendent Samuel Wodah, Accra Police Divisional Commander, appealed to the public to appreciate the good works being done by the Police, instead of focusing on the unprofessional conduct of a few.

The traders had complained about the rampant stealing of their wares, due to inadequate security.
