A severe water shortage has forced surgical doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region, to suspend all surgical cases.
The hospital has been struggling with a water supply crisis since last week, making it impossible to perform surgical operations safely.
According to citinewsroom.com, the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association issued a memo on March 25, directing hospital management to suspend all surgical cases until the water supply is restored.
The memo emphasised the critical importance of water in maintaining hygiene, conducting surgical procedures, and ensuring patient care.
"We cannot continue to perform surgical operations without access to clean water. The safety of our patients is our top priority, and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause," Dr Michael Leat, Chairman of the Association, stated.
He said that despite efforts to manage the situation, the water shortage has reached a critical point, severely impacting patient safety and healthcare delivery.
The hospital is urging management to explore alternative water supply options and provide regular updates on the situation.
The suspension of surgical cases is expected to continue until the water supply is restored.
However, hospital authorities are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible to minimise disruptions to patient care, the report added.
