Water tankers to be installed

Accra, 13, March, GNA - Alhaji Abubakar Saddique Boniface, Minister of Water Resources Works and Housing and officials from the Ghana Water and Sewerage Company and Aqua Vitens Rand has inspected some sites demarcated for the placement of water tanks in some communities in Accra.

This had come about due to the severe water shortages which had hit some parts of the Greater Accra Region.

The areas included the former American Embassy, State House quarters, Salem one and three Junior High School, La Gbana and La Bola Junction. The rest were New Mantsease, La General Hospital, La Wireless and Osu Doku.

Addressing the media, Mr. Saddique Boniface said the tanks would be placed at vantage points so that they would be accessible to all the people in the catchment areas.

He said the water would be sold to the people in the community at much lower prices and managed by Aqua Vitens Rand, the company responsible for the production and distribution of water in the country.

The Minister said the provision of water tanks and bole holes were short term measures by the government to help minimize the impact of the water shortage on the communities affected.

During the inspection, the minister and his team also discovered households with illegal water connections and warned that a task force would be deployed to check such connections very soon. He noted that the size of the community would determine the number of tanks to be provided and expressed confidence in Aqua Vitens Rand's ability to live up to the task of making water accessible to all households.
