Minister for Special Development Initiatives, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has stated that over 200 small dams are being constructed in each of the constituencies across the three regions of the north.
She detailed that even though the dam is 80 percent complete, there is hope that the project would be completed early next year to provide all year round availability of water for small holder farming and livestock watering.
It can be recalled during the 2016 elections that President Akufo-Addo promised to construct dams in villages of the three northern regions which would encourage dry season farming in order for Ghana to become self-sufficient in food production.
After assuming office, the president established the Ministry to accelerate government priority projects such as poverty eradication, access to clean water and sanitation, agriculture transformation, reduction of inequalities and local infrastructure development and also instructed them to formulate policies for the implementation of governments’ flagship projects through the right Authorities.
However, Mavis Hawa Koomson, minister in charge of Special Development Initiative has specified that government has not yielded on its decision to construct the 270 dams as speculated by some members of the opposition party, particularly Former President Mahama.
Speaking to journalists in Accra on Tuesday, she said government has delivered on its promise to build a dam in each farming village in northern region and that some of the dams have been completed.
She also responded to the claims made by the former president saying, if he (John Mahama) cared to know where the dams were, he could have call her on the phone for directions on where to find them
“When you go to Kpandai, we have one there; when you go to Salaga, from Yeji you cross the river to Salaga, there is one village there called Garishegu, there is one dam there. Yendi and Yeji, too.”
“These are some of the towns or villages that have received their completed dams,”
“If he [Mr Mahama] wants to know where the dams are, he should contact me and I’ll take him there. She stated
