President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to restoring peace in the Bawku area, stating that it is one of his top priorities.
He assured the public that his administration will work tirelessly to bring lasting peace and stability to the region.
In a video shared on X by GHOne TV on January 14, 2025, the president said, “During the campaign, I stated that if God granted our desire and I was elected president, bringing peace to Bawku would be one of my top priorities. Today marks exactly one week since I was sworn in at the Black Star Square, and this is my first major assignment outside Accra. So, I decided to come and assure you that we will work very hard to restore peace to Bawku.”
President Mahama lamented the renewed conflicts in the Bawku area, reflecting on its peaceful nature during his previous presidency.
He acknowledged the hardships residents have endured in recent years, including fear and stress caused by ongoing insecurity.
"I remember when I was president, Bawku and the surrounding areas were very peaceful, and work was ongoing as people went about their duties. It's sad that this situation has arisen again.
"For the last three years, I know you have not been able to sleep and have been living under stress. Our government’s priority will be to restore peace to Bawku so that everyone can go about their daily lives without fear of harassment,” he added.
President Mahama also announced plans to appoint key officials to address the issue, urging residents to exercise restraint.
"We want to assure you that we are putting in place the necessary appointments so that we can have ministers and other officials responsible for security take charge. Within this week, we will appoint the Minister of Defense, the Minister of the Interior, the National Security Advisor, the National Security Coordinator, the BNI Director, and other officials," he stated.
He continued, "When these appointments are made, I will charge them to make Bawku one of their top priorities. I appeal to you to exercise patience and restraint. Rest assured, I am fully aware of the issue, and I am committed to resolving it. Trust me and this administration that, by the grace of God, peace will return to Bawku permanently."
The president emphasized the need for peace and development in the traditional area and pledged to continue engaging with leaders, including a scheduled visit to the Nayiri in Nalerigu.
"As my younger brother mentioned, we will continue to Nalerigu to meet the Nayiri and deliver a message to him. We cannot live in a country where our people don’t feel safe. Our people must feel safe to travel wherever they want, at any time, without fear of being attacked.
"You can be assured that we will address all these issues so that we can all enjoy the peace needed for our traditional areas to progress. Thank you very much, and may God richly bless you. My father reminded me about his request, and you all know what that request was. My assurance is that we need peace to establish the necessary conditions for fulfilling your desires. Rest assured, I have not forgotten about it," the president added.
