We are tired of sweeping used condoms, ‘wee’ embers - Pupils cry out

The classroom block of the Agona Amanful Basic School in the Agona East District of the Central Region has been turned into a ‘ghetto base’ by some miscreants engaged in prostitution and illegal drugs.

Pupils of the school say the activities of these miscreants leave their classrooms in a mess all the time, noting they have to sweep used condoms, marijuana embers and faeces every morning before classes take place.

Doors and windows to the classrooms are without locks, and currently in a deplorable state, which the pupils say, give the miscreants the opportunity to access the place at night for their nefarious activities.

They told Accra-based Onua FM that they are tired of having to go through the trauma of sweeping used condoms and faeces as well as pieces of marijuana by these miscreants every morning.

The pupils have thus appealed to and want educational, security and district assembly authorities to intervene and ensure an end to the situation.

Deplorable classrooms

Meanwhile, the school authorities say the school block is in a deplorable state and threatens the lives of the pupils.

Some pupils who spoke to Onua FM narrated how they always have to suspend classes, and in some classes, close whenever it rains due to roof leakages and cracked walls of their classroom block.

Headmistress of the school, Adelia Kafui Lagbeneku, said the situation at the school was getting out of hand, adding that they are also faced with inadequate desks for pupils to sit on for their lessons.

District chief executive for Agona East, Dennis Armah, cautioned the ‘wee smokers’ who have been using the classrooms of the school for their criminal activities.

He said the assembly will not hesitate to prosecute anyone who will be arrested.
