The Convention People’s Party has reacted to NPP running mate Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s apology following comments made at his unveiling, which they consider as denigrating the achievements of Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

The secretary to the Independent Committee of the Convention People's Party (CPP), Kwame Botsio, speaking on JoyNews, questioned the authenticity of the apology letter which has since gone viral.

According to him, the apology statement released on the official X account of NAPO does not bear his signature, thus asserting that the letter may be fake, myjoyonline.com reports.

“However, this apology letter does not bear the signature or any other signature so to say we can respond adequately to it will be an exercise in futility.”

NAPO at his unveiling, said "Since independence from 1957 till today, we’ve not had any president that has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I say from 1957 till today, you can bring your Kwame Nkrumah... no president who has protected Ghana and moved the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.”

The CPP, in an earlier statement on July 10, called for the immediate resignation of NAPO from his positions as running mate and Energy Minister. The party further threatened to embark on a nationwide protest against NAPO, failure of him to resign honourably.

Following the statement, a letter purporting to be an apology from NAPO has since come to the fore.

His apology said, “My statement last Tuesday, 9th July, in Kumasi on the performance of President Akufo-Addo has elicited varied reactions. The statement reflects my personal opinion about President Akufo-Addo's impact relative to other Presidents we have had.

“I wish to emphasise that I never meant to disrespect our former President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, or any of our former heads of state, including my own grand uncle and mentor, Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor. I note the concerns raised after my statement. I apologise sincerely and regret any discomfort caused,” he apologised.
