President John Mahama has consoled persons who lost relatives and friends on June 3, 2015 when Accra was rocked by a twin disaster of flood and fire which killed over 150 people.

Exactly a year ago major towns in Accra were flooded leaving thousands displaced and homeless. The destruction and death from the June 3 dooms day event has been described as one of the darkest days in Ghana’s history.

President Mahama on the one year anniversary of the event tweeted that “May the souls of those who departed on June 3, 2015 rest in perfect peace. We'll continue to correct dev'ts that led to the disaster.”

This follows many other consoling comments from sympathizers who have taken to social media and other platforms to send their warmth to the survivors and families of victims.

A commemoration service is to be held at the venue of the disaster at the Kwame Nkrumah circle, precisely the Goil filling station.

Help for survivors

Although hundreds of philanthropists have made donations to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other state institutions, some survivors and victims say a year after the disaster, no help has come to them.

They have lamented the promise and fail attitude of the state institutions which had promised them support. Some people have also praised government and some civil society organisations for their assistance during their time of dire need.

Lessons from June 3

A clarion call has been made from far and near about the lifestyle of the populace and the indiscriminate dumping of refuse especially plastic waste. Although efforts have been made in this regard to prevent the backward attitude of littering, a lot more effort is needed to significantly reduce the menace.
