The Akufo-Addo-led government will implement the 3 per cent increase in the Common Fund for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) as a way of ensuring that they receive the needed resources to make life comfortable for them, Otiko Afisa Djaba, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, has said.

Speaking at the maiden dialogue session with persons with disabilities in Accra on Thursday, 16 February, Ms Djaba said: “Persons with disabilities have intellect and we need to support them to bring it out. I will like to assure you of His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP government’s commitment to Persons With Disabilities. We will continue to work with you to promote the welfare and the empowerment of Persons With Disabilities so that we have an inclusive governance.”

“Let us always remember that there is an ability in disabilities, so, let us focus on the ability of people and not their disability.”

She added: “This administration is committed to empowering the necessary institutions to ensure the proper implementation of laws and interventions which are aimed at promoting and protecting the rights of Persons with Disabilities. We will ensure that the National Council on Persons with Disabilities is decentralised to the regional level in order to coordinate the activities of the various federations.

“To ensure that PWDs receive the needed resources at the District level – that is to be able to meet current demand – we will implement the 3 per cent increase in the Common Fund disbursement to persons with disabilities,” she added.
