A group of Law Degree Holders calling themselves Concerned LLB Graduates say they are disappointed in the decision by the General Legal Council(GLC) to reject their petition regarding the upcoming Ghana School of Law entrance examination for potential students.
Spokesperson for the group, Naomi Nana Sam told Accra-based Citi FM that they’re unfazed by the decision of the Council, insisting the leadership of the group will meet shortly to determine their next line of action on the matter.
“I am very much disappointed because what I am being in school is different from what is happening right now. If we decide not to take part in the exams what happens to us? And is the constitution reigning supreme or is the General Legal Council reigning supreme? The constitution is always the supreme law of the land. As law students if this what the law requires of us, we have nothing to ask, so our next move of action, leadership is about to meet and we decide on what to do next,” she noted.
The group last week called on the GLC to facilitate automatic admission into the Law School by scrapping this years exams set for July 14, 2017.
The position of the LLB Graduates, follows the Supreme Court ruling declaring the entrance examination and subsequent interview by the Ghana School of law as unconstitutional.
They were of the view that the impending exams will amount to an illegality after the Supreme court’s judgment on the matter.
But the GLC in its response sighted by Kasapafmonline.com shot down the petition by the group, saying the entrance exams will take place in line with the terms of the judgment by the Supreme court.
Early on last week, Mr Godfred Kwame Tessu, a member of the group told the Press that they’ll go back to Supreme court for review of the judgment or put injunction on the Ghana School of Law, if the GLC refuses to listen to them.
“Just as the Supreme court has indicated that the exam and the interview is unconstitutional, I believe all the stakeholders are aware that we cannot go against the constitution. Per Article 1(2) of our constitution, anything that is not in agreement with the constitution is void from start. Therefore we believe that Her Ladyship, who is also the Chairman of the General Legal Council will look through our petition and do what she ought to do. However notwithstanding that, we believe that there are other avenues that are opened to us by going to court and ask for a review and also placing an injunction on the exams. That is also our constitutional right that we can pursue. But that we believe will be our last resort.” he told a Press Conference in Accra last week.
