We’re not scared of Kennedy Agyapong - Central Region MPs

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong

The three Central Regional Members of Parliament who recused themselves from the Privileges Committee's investigations into allegations of contempt against Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, have defended their decision to do so.

The MPs at Tuesday’s hearing into alleged disparaging remarks against Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensa-Bonsu and Parliament as a whole, wrote a letter to the Chairman of the Privileges Committee recusing themselves from the hearing because of the involvement of the alleged contemnor, Kennedy Agyapong who is the chairman of their Regional Caucus.

Mr Agyapong's lawyers comprising Adansi Asokwa MP, KT Hammond and Effutu MP, Alexander Affenyo- Markin
argued that the committee must be re-constituted before the investigations can continue forcing the chairman to indefinitely postpone hearings.

Speaking to Class News’ parliamentary correspondent, Ekow Annan, Gomoa Central MP, Naana Eyiah said the decision was not because they are afraid of Mr Agyapong.

She said: “We don’t want to sit on it, they can decide on what they want to do because we are not the only ones on the committee. He is the chairman of our caucus, and, so, how can we sit on his case?

“We are 31, and, so, there are still more people who can sit on the case, so, we have the choice to do this. It has happened before… I’m not a kid and Cynthia and Nsowa-Djan, we are not kids, we decided on our own, nobody pushed us and that’s the truth… It’s not about friendship, we are all friends here but he’s our chairman and we can’t sit on his case. I’m not afraid of him, none of us is afraid of Kennedy, we’re doing what we want to do. They said they are fixing another date to speak to the speaker, the speaker will consult the leadership, the leadership will bring other people on board to sit in, so they have more people around.”
