The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has declared its readiness to support the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in protecting lives during the rainy season.

The service affirmed its preparedness to rescue victims of potential flooding as the rains approach.

Deputy Fire Officer One (DO1) Alex King Nartey reported that his team has initiated education and sensitization programs with stakeholders and communities susceptible to flooding, aiming to safeguard lives and property.

However, he acknowledged that they face logistical constraints.

Consequently, he has appealed to the government, individuals, organizations, and corporate entities in Ghana to assist the service by donating logistics to enhance their effectiveness.

"We are prepared to offer our services this season. Yet, we are appealing for support from the government, corporate Ghana, organizations, and individuals to bolster the GNFS. We require additional logistics to become more effective and efficient," he stated.

While speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM's 'Nyankonton Mu Nsem,' he mentioned that the GNFS will persist in training its personnel and collaborating with stakeholders on flood mitigation and prevention.

This initiative is part of a long-term strategy to diminish the impact of floods and foster disaster resilience in Ghana.

Additionally, he warned the public against taking shelter under trees, billboards, or electric poles during heavy rains, as these structures are susceptible to collapse and can cause harm.

He emphasized the importance of raising awareness about changing weather patterns and encouraged the public to stay informed about weather forecasts and alerts issued by the Ghana Meteorological Agency.

He advised residents to steer clear of flood-prone zones, relocate to safer locales, and devise an evacuation strategy.

He also urged drivers to exercise caution during heavy rainfall, avoid traversing flooded roads, and activate their headlights to maintain safe distances from other vehicles.
