The Minority in Parliament has vowed to resist intimidation from the Attorney General and Minister of Justice following a recent press conference by Dr. Dominic Ayine.
At a press conference on Tuesday March 25, 2025, the Caucus responded to Dr. Ayine’s March 24, 2025, briefing, in which he addressed investigations into officials of the previous administration and criticised the Minority Leader for comments regarding a raid on the home of former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison.
Leading the Minority’s response, John Darko, MP for Suame, asserted their right to speak freely.
Dr. Ayine had suggested that the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s statements, accusing security officials of misconduct during the raid, were defamatory and not protected by parliamentary immunity.
“One issue he spoke about was the constitutional immunity of parliamentarians. He sought to attack the Minority Leader, claiming that Members of Parliament (MPs), including the Minority Leader, cannot use constitutional immunity to defend others. The Attorney General attempted to create the wrong impression that the Minority Leader’s press conference was intended to defame members of the security apparatus.
"We view this attempt to belittle the immunity granted to parliamentarians to speak freely on issues of national importance as very unfortunate. We acknowledge that parliamentary immunity is not absolute and has its limits. However, we shall not be intimidated by threats of defamation suits, whether from the Attorney General or his assigns,” John Darko said.
Officials from National Security recently conducted a search at the residence of Dr. Addison, retrieving CCTV recordings and other items as evidence.
During his press conference on Monday March 24, 2025, the Attorney General maintained that the search was lawful. However, the Minority in Parliament insists that the search, which they describe as a raid, violated the rights of the former governor.
