Former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Crabbe, has stated that the party failed to maintain the goodwill of Ghanaians after assuming power in 2017.
He believes, certain conducts of the NPP’s while in office caused the goodwill extended by Ghanaians to dissipate quickly.
In an interview with Citi FM, monitored by GhanaWeb, Crabbe, who once served as the second vice chairman of the NPP, described the party as weak.
"Unfortunately, we squandered it [goodwill]. I have always said it all comes down to the fact that we have a very weak party. When you have a weak party, it cannot call people to order. A weak party means that the leadership itself...we elect people, and once you elect them, I am talking about from national to polling station, it has been a problem," he explained.
He continued: "I remember that when I was the Greater Accra regional chairman, I recognized that we had an issue where we elected people by popular vote. Once you elect the person, you have to work on the person; you need to train them so that they really understand what the job is, just like in any organization. People are not just hired and left like that. Training, retraining, and other things are necessary."
Political analysts have described the NPP’s performance in the 2024 general elections as its worst since the country returned to democratic rule in 1992.
Former President John Dramani Mahama was declared the winner of Ghana’s 2024 presidential election, securing a remarkable return to the nation’s highest office after a fierce contest.
The announcement, made by the Electoral Commission (EC) on Monday, December 9, confirmed Mahama’s victory with 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the valid votes cast, defeating his primary rival, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%.
Following its heavy defeat, the NPP has constituted a committee, headed by former Speaker of Parliament Mike Aaron Oquaye, to analyze the factors behind its significant loss in the 2024 elections.
