Embattled businessman and the third accused in the €2.37 million ambulance case, Richard Jakpa, believes Ghana still has judges who show honesty and strong principles in the discharge of their duties.
Speaking to the media after he and former Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. Ato Forson, who is the first accused in the case, were acquitted and discharged by the Court of Appeal on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, Mr. Jakpa said there are judges who continue to preserve their integrity despite external pressures.
"What I will tell Ghanaians is that we still have judges of integrity in our legal system. We still have them, even though this government has managed to capture the judicial system. We still have other judges who maintain their integrity. So there is still hope for Ghana."
A Court of Appeal panel of three, in a 2-1 majority decision, said Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe’s ruling on a submission of no case to answer on March 30, 2023, for the accused to open their defence was in error.
Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo and Justice Philip Bright Mensah granted the request, acquitting and discharging them, while Justice Poku Acheampong, the presiding judge, dismissed their request.
