The Electoral Commission (EC) has stated that it will ensure the returning officer for the Ablekuma North Constituency completes the collation of parliamentary results for the 2024 election.

The statement by the EC comes after Vincent Obeng announced his decision to resign from his role and called on the EC to find a replacement for him, citing frustrations during a collation exercise on January 8, 2024.

The Ablekuma North result, which has been under serious dispute between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was left incomplete on Wednesday, with three out of seven remaining polling stations outstanding.

According to a citinewsroom.com report sighted by GhanaWeb, the Deputy Electoral Commissioner in Charge of Training, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, informed journalists on Wednesday that the commission will ensure Obeng returns to complete his duty.

“I think it is out of frustration that he is saying what he said, and I understand him, but I don’t think that it is the end of the road. We will get him back. I want to put on record that the commission has no interest at all in who becomes the MP, but we should be very careful with the precedent we set. It is the voter who should choose their leaders, be it presidential or parliamentary,” the report said.

The NDC gained an overwhelming majority of seats in the 2024 parliamentary election, securing 183 seats as against the 88 currently held by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Four other seats are held by independent members, while a single seat, the Ablekuma North seat, remains outstanding due to the ongoing dispute between the two leading political parties.
