Convener of the group, Let My Vote Count (LMVC), David Asante has served notice that they will embark on another demonstration to press home their demand for a new voters register.
Speaking to Prince Minkah on the Ultimate Breakfast, David Asante mentioned that they were unable to present their petition to the Electoral Commission (EC).
Pro-opposition groups Let My Vote Count (LMVC), Alliance for Accountable Governance, (AFAG) Movement for Change (MFC), the youth wing of the New Patriotic Party and some institutions on Wednesday suffered police brutality as they marched in the capital, Accra, to demand for a voters’ register.
“What we are excited most about is the fact that, now we know the need for a new voters register. It’s not just a battle limited to LMVC, it is a sensitive matter at the very heart of the peace and the democracy we practice in this country, The fight has just began, the fight for a new voters register has just began. We will go on another demonstration,” David Asante remarked.
He further mentioned “it was barbaric on the side of the police to use brutish force when it was part of the agreement that we were not going to picket at the Electoral Commission. However, leadership would send the petition. We got there and we saw the police had formed a barricade, attempting to negotiate with the police; before we could say Jack, the first point of call, to disperse an unarmed crowd of 20 was gunshots”.
David Asante added that the group will hold a press conference to announce the new date. More than 20 leaders of the march have been arrested by the police for breaching the agreed route for the protesters.
