The Electoral Commission of Ghana has clarified reports about shortfalls and discrepancies in ballot papers dispatched to the Bono and Volta Regions.
According to the EC, the discrepancies were identified through its routine verification process.
In a statement issued on November 29, 2024, the Commission confirmed that its regional staff discovered the discrepancies during a standard review to ensure ballot papers matched statistics provided to printers and political parties.
"This is a standard procedure of the Commission. It is important to note that this additional verification process unearths any issues with the Ballot Papers and enables corrections to be carried out ahead of the Elections,” the statement signed by Deputy Chairman of Operations, Samuel Tettey, read.
The EC further emphasised that this additional layer of accountability allows errors to be corrected before the elections.
“It is important to note that this additional verification process unearths any issues with the ballot papers and enables corrections to be carried out ahead of the elections,” the statement added.
The EC also indicated that shortfalls were not limited to the Volta Region but were similarly identified in Greater Accra, Western North, Upper West, Western, and Bono East Regions.
"For the benefit of the general public, similar shortfalls and discrepancies were discovered and reported back to the Commission by our Regional Directors upon inspection of Ballot Papers dispatched ahead of the December 2024 Election.
"The shortfalls occurred in: Greater Accra, Western North, Upper West and Western Regions," it stated.
Rejecting claims of secrecy or misconduct, the EC reaffirmed its commitment to operating transparently.
“If the Commission had anything to hide, it would not transparently call for a reprint of ballot papers to make up for shortfalls,” it stated.
