Kpasenkpe (Northern Region), 12, Oct. '98 Floods caused by the White Volta last September destroyed about 270 hectares of cereals and legumes at Duu, Nabari, Sariba and Kpasenkpe and affected 369 farm families in the West Mamprusi district of the Northern region.. Similar floods destroyed about eight hectares of food crop farms and displaced more than 50 people at Nabogu in the Savelugu-Nanton district.
Mr San Nasamu Asabigi, Deputy Northern Regional Minister, last Sunday spent about five hours visiting the affected communities to assess the extent of damage.
At Kpasenkpe, the Minister was joined by officials of the district assembly and newsmen to inspect some of the affected farms. Mr Nasamu, however, noted that despite the disaster, food production in the region was generally good, contrary to fears of poor harvest. He said the government is committed to help them out of their present predicament.
Wudana Dabo, Chief Elder of Wulugu Naba, the Paramount Chief of the area, appealed to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to send relief to the victims.
At Nabogu, the assembly member, Mr Harunna Sambo, appealed for building materials and foodstuffs to help resettle the affected people. GRi
