The Parliamentary Candidate for the Ketu North constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Edem Agbana, has explained why retired Black Stars footballer Asamoah Gyan has distanced himself from politics.

Agbana noted that Gyan was known to be affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during his football career.

He revealed that the former Black Stars captain decided to leave politics after realising that NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential ambitions might not succeed.

Speaking on Newday on TV3, Agbana said, "As a football administrator and enthusiast, I have followed many of the Black Stars players, including Asamoah Gyan. When he decided to join the NPP's campaign team, it did not surprise some of us because even during his playing days, it was clear where his affiliations lay.

"The reason he is stepping back now is that after joining Dr. Bawumia's campaign, he realised it is not going to succeed. Gyan knows he is part of a futile effort," he said.

Agbana dismissed Gyan’s claim that he is quitting politics to focus on helping the youth develop their talents, suggesting it is just a cover to avoid criticism.

"At what point did Asamoah realize he is for all the youth of this country? If being part of Dr. Bawumia's campaign would benefit the youth, he should stay and advocate for their interests," he added.

In a press release, Gyan announced that he has quit politics and is not associated with any political party, despite previously joining Dr. Bawumia’s campaign team.

The footballer stated that he intends to build sports facilities to help the youth develop their talents in sports.
