'Why would anybody lie like that?' - Dr. Abbey reacts to NAPO saying there has been no hunger under Akufo-Addo

Renowned broadcaster Dr. Randy Abbey has criticised the vice-presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), over his claim that there has been no hunger in Ghana during the 8 years of the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government.

According to him, the claim by NAPO cannot be the truth because the shortage of food at Senior High Schools across the country has made news headlines on several occasions.

Dr Abbey, who made these remarks during the Wednesday, July 10, 2024 edition of his Good Morning Ghana programme, was surprised that NAPO would make such a claim.

"No, it's a complete lie. I mean, we all live in this country. We know the problems with food. Headmasters are calling on parents to provide food, old students to provide food. Students don't have food to eat.

"These were things that were on the front pages of newspapers, were discussed on programmes extensively over a period, to the extent that during that period, heads of institutions were soliciting for food from parents and old students were never sanctioned by the GES or the Ministry of Education, contrary to others who were sanctioned for doing things," he said.

He added, "This is just a year or so ago, schools everywhere, parents were being asked to contribute to feeding children. So why would anybody lie like that?"

What NAPO said:

NAPO, during his initial remarks at his unveiling as the running mate of NPP flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, asserted that it is only under the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that Ghana has not experienced hunger.

"God has blessed the NPP party. Anybody who says God has not blessed us is a liar. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is the only president under whose 8 years of reign there has been no hunger, am I lying? For 8 years, there has been no hunger in Ghana," he said in the Twi dialect.

He added, "While the whole world was experiencing hunger, Ghana had food. Let us give thanks to God for what He has done for our party."
