Accidents in the Winneba District increased from 81 in 2011 to 130 in 2012, the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) John Paul Akonde in-charge of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the Ghana Police Service, has said.
He said 33 people, 25 males and eight females, were killed in 2012 as against 20 comprising 15 males and five females in 2011. Some 232 people were injured in 2012 as against 124 people in 2011.
He said a total of 203 vehicles, made up of 108 commercial, 87 private and 8 motor bikes were involved in 2012 as against a total of 121 in 2011, comprising 63 commercial cars, 50 private and 8 motor bikes in 2011.
ASP Akonde said a total of 2,736.00 Ghana cedis fines were imposed on drivers in 2011 and 15,010.00 Ghana cedis in 2012, adding that 71 drivers were convicted while 45 in 2011.
He appealed to drivers and pedestrians to be very careful on the roads to help reduce deaths.
