Women Assembly members propose Fund

Sekondi, Aug 09, GNA - Miss Jane Edna Nyame, the President of Women Caucus of the National Association of Local Government Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), has said participants at the first National Conference of Women Assembly Members proposed the establishment of a Common Fund for assembly members.

She told the GNA in an interview that the participants were of the opinion that if assembly members were resourced their productivity would increase.

Miss Nyame, who is the Western Regional Director of the National Council on Women and Development (NCWD), said assembly members are not performing as they should because they are not resourced. She said assembly members could implement their own programmes to complement that of the assemblies if the Assembly Members Common Fund is established.

Miss Nyame said assembly members could also assist to improve sanitation, protect the environment and undertake projects when they are resourced.

In the light of this, she said, the participants proposed that the work of assembly members should be made a full time job to enable them give off their best.

Miss Nyame urged women organisations to assist their members who have the potential to stand for the district level elections next year. She appealed to the government and non-governmental organisations (NGO) to assist women who are interested in contesting the elections to help build their capacities.
