Women advised to create communication links with their daughters

Kumasi, Oct.06, GNA - Madam Elizabeth Agyemang, Member of Parliament for Oforikrom, has asked mothers to create good communication links with their children especially the girls to discuss problems freely with them. She said this would prevent the children from falling prey to peer pressure that would affect their upbringing.

Madam Agyemang was speaking at the 40th Anniversary and Fourth Congress of the Kumasi Archdiocesan Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus in Kumasi. About 3,000 delegates are attending the three-day Congress under the theme "Good Parenting Good for the Youth" from the Kumasi Archdiocese of the Catholic Church. She called on children to be disciplined and show good morals to be loved by their parents.

Madam Patricia Appiagyei, Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, attributed the rising delinquency in children, armed robbery and other social vices to indiscipline and irresponsibility on parents who shirked their responsibilities and left children to their fate. She said although the Children's Act enjoined parents to be responsible towards their children, what was required most was love and care that could not be made available by any legislation or replaced by individual social conscience.

Madam Appiagyei called on parents to be disciplined in the proper upbringing of their children. Mrs Veronica Nancy Amevinya, Archdiocesan President of the Society said the Congress would help to enhance their relationship with God and raise funds for the needy, especially street children.
