The former Women’s Commissioner of GNUPS, Madam Nancy Dery has reiterated that, the development of women in every endeavour is the surest way to improve the socio-economic growth of any nation.

According to her, naturally, women are better managers of the economic thus if given the necessary tool and exposure can bring a totally solution to underdevelopment and abject poverty in their communities.

Speaking at the Women's Weeks Celebrations of the Bolgatanga Polytechnic on the theme “Empowering Young Women: through Mentorship and Training”, Madam Nancy said, the role of women in every segment of society is vital, adding that, the development of any society is linked with the empowerment of women within that environment.

She noted that, one of the biggest factors that impede sustainable development and growth in both rural and urban communities are the neglect and discrimination against women, reiterating that, women still suffered inequality at work, exclusion and lacks basic information to growth.

Madam Nancy said, the country can have an enormous growth in every aspect of
the economic if women are given equal opportunities to development and growth.

“Women’s empowering to participate fully in economic life across sectors is essential to build strong economies, achieve international agreed goals for development and sustainability and improve the quality of life for women, men, families and communities”.

She noted that, despite the appointments of women into various political positions by the government, however, it’s not enough considering the work force gap between men and women.

“There should be a deliberate policy under our development agenda to at least appoint over 40% of women into political positions to bridge the yawning gap between men and women in our political landscape. Governments must show enormous committed and support in women empowerment and growth”.

Madam Nancy Dery noted that, misconstrue and misinformation about women empowerment continue to derail the efforts of getting men to support women empowerment and development.

“People have misinterpreted women empowerment to mean that, women want to rub shoulders with men but the truth is, we cannot rub shoulders with men. We need the support of men to be empowered as women. Women empowerment should be seen as a development issue and not as women wanting to challenge men in a spiral of social development”.

The former GNUPS Women Commissioner urged young women to take advantage of every opportunity life offers them to inspire others, “You have to inspire and challenge yourself in life, don’t become burden on others, you must strive to achieve in life.”

Madam Nancy Dery also called on Women in leadership to continue to inspire and motivate young women to aspire to leadership positions.

Madam Nancy Dery thanked the Women’s Commissioner of the Bolgatanga Polytechnic Miss Atosona Modasta and her team for organizing the program.
