Women's Commission of NUGS honour Mrs Asmah

Accra, Nov 17, GNA - The Women's Commission of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) on Wednesday honoured Mrs Gladys Asmah, Minister of Women and Children's Affairs for her contribution towards the development of women and children.

The Commission presented a citation to the Minister for vigorously pursuing policies that had transformed the lives of women and children and built among them stronger family ties.

Ms Vida Agyekum, Representative of the Commission, said the launch of the Gender and Children Policy, Early Childhood Development Policy as well as the institution of the Women's Development Fund were clear manifestations of the perseverance of the Minister.

"Being an achiever, we are particularly keen to commend her because the challenge of the woman today is to prove her worth to the whole world," she said.

She said the example set by Mrs Asmah was a challenge to all people not only women to be committed to their duties and to aspire for higher achievements.

Mrs Asmah said she was grateful to the students for recognising her efforts and challenged them to aim higher to leadership positions to take over when she and others had retired.

"We need more Asmah's who will continue from where we leave the scenes," she said.

She stated that women had been downplayed for too long and education was the only tool that could empower them to build their confidence to fight for recognition among society.
