‘Won Gbo’ demo: Police to summon NPP for defying route

The police have served notice they will summon the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for defying the agreed route at the ‘Won gbo’ demonstration in Accra on Wednesday.

The highly attended protest march against the erratic power supply in Ghana attracted a mammoth crowd and was led by NPP flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo and other party stalwarts.

The march began at the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in the morning and ended at the Hearts of Oak Park at about 1.45pm.

The organisers agreed not to use the Central Business District but rather the TUC-Accra Poly area, but resorted to the busy UTC-Rawlings Park direction as the police watched unconcerned.

Speaking to Starr News after the peaceful demonstration, the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohunu said: “The challenge was only at the Farisco Traffic Light where the people defied the route and broke into the market centre.”

He added: “We are going to invite the NPP leadership after here to explain why they didn’t go by their words.”

According to DCOP Yohunu, they allowed the demonstrators to go ahead through the unapproved route to maintain the peace.
