No Ghanaian University was listed among the top 5000 universities in the world in the 2007 THES – QS World University Rankings. Out of the about 20 universities in Ghana today, only four made the top 100 list in Africa.
UNIVERSITY OF GHANA, Legon led the pack ranked 40th in Africa and 5,702th in the world. KWAME NKRUMAH UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY placed 60th in Africa and 6,703 in the world.
ASHESI UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, a private, accredited, non-sectarian college founded by Ghanaweb 2005 person of the year, Patrick Awuah, made the top 100 list in Africa. A very laudable achievement considering the college started operation some 5 years ago.
University of Cape Coast, University for Development Studies and University College of Education, Winneba all failed to make the top 100.
All the top 8 universities on the continent are in South Africa, with University of Cape Town claiming the number one spot and the only African university in the top 500 (website).
MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY topped the world ranking with STANFORD and Harvard at second and third respectively. All the top 18 universities in the world are located in the United States.
