Ghana’s number one urban radio station’s recently introduced Y Leaderboard Series segment to the ‘Myd Morning Radio Show’(MMRS), is becoming unparalleled when it comes to guest selection for a radio show.
The ‘Y Leaderboard Series’ is a segment with the objective to develop the youth and provide inspiration to listeners by hosting leaders and achievers in various industries in Ghana and beyond.
The fifth (5th) guest to grace the ‘Y Leaderboard Series’ segment after an array of inspirational achievers in various disciplines was boxing hall of famer, Azumah Nelson.
The former professional boxer who is widely considered as the greatest African boxer of all time, sat down with Rev. Erskine on Tuesday, 2nd June, 2020 in an interview where he narrated his intriguing story as a legendary sports man.
The renowned Ghanaian boxing icon, Azumah 'zoom zoom' Nelson has explained why he preferred to knockout his opponents rather than leave the bouts decision to the judges.
"My fist and none other was my judge. I made sure I took my own judge to the ring to prevent judges from possibly giving the fight to my opponent. You can beat your opponent alright but you may lose the fight because judges saw the fight in a different light" he said.
He charged the youth to do whatever that they choose to do, with passion. “Don’t copy blindly. Do what you love. With that, even if you are tired you will not stop. Right now people who don’t have jobs will take whatever job you give them because they don’t have any choice. You see that they will sleep on the job or become unhappy”, he stated.
The only professor in boxing, recounting his first fight as a boy mentioned that he was in his mother's family house when he saw a man with boxing shoes hanging over his neck with a boy he presumed to be his son walking past their home.
But looking at myself, I felt I could beat the boy so I challenged him to a bout and the man asked that I come to the gym the following day. I recalled going to the gym the following day with my friends in high hopes of going to beat the boy, when we got there and the fight was set, the boy beat me so badly.
With his persistent spirit, he still went on to pursue the fight until he finally beat his opponent in their fourth fight. This he said, was the beginning of the Azumah 'zoom zoom' Nelson story that led him to achieve worldwide recognition.
He also shared the essence of discipline in achieving greater heights. “To become a winner, you need discipline. In boxing, if you want to win, you need to be humble and disciplined. You need to listen to whatever your coach tells you”, he said.
Speaking about Azumah Nelson’s interview on the Y Leaderboard series, Eddy Blay, YFM Accra Programmes Manager said:
You wouldn’t be holding that designer handbag or be wearing those clothes if a designer wasn’t motivated to turn their visualization into a realization.
That is what Y Leaderboard series is doing, bringing the right people to motivate and inspire. The reason motivation is important because every person on this earth is unique and has a purpose.
To steward your purpose well, you have to be motivated to work towards your goals which helps your dreams become a reality. Not just for your sake, but the sake of others as well.’’
