Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku, Minister of Trade and Industry, on Monday said all commercial yam exports should be prohibited for 90 days with immediate effect.
This, he said, is to control excessive volumes of Ghana yams that have been exported leading to a collapse in prices on the export market. A statement issued in Accra said during the period of prohibition, only cargoes of yam exported by the Ghana Yam Producers and Exporters Association shall be allowed and called on the customs officers to enforce the prohibition.
It said the measure is to conserve the yam export trade and institute regulation to provide a stable framework within which Ghana yams may be exported.
