Yamoransa chiefs laud plastic waste segregation

The chiefs and people of Yamoransa in the Mfantsiman District have commended the plastic waste segregation programme.

Nana Acquah II, Sumankwahene and spokesperson for the chiefs, made the commendation when he spoke with the Ghana News Agency at the launch of the plastic waste management programme dubbed: “Cash Your Waste” at Yamoransa in the Central Region.

He said the idea was in line with the objectives of the chiefs in enhancing effective wastes collection and disposal in the communities, which would go a long way in reducing littering.

He said apart from the awareness of waste separation among the people, stiffer punishment should be meted out to sanitation offenders to serve as a deterrent to others.

Nana Acquah urged the people to contribute their quota to the successful implementation of the waste segregation project.

He called on the Mfantsiman Muncipal Assembly to take measures to reintroduce environmental sanitation officers (Tankase) to ensure strict compliance with the sanitation laws.

He said conscious efforts had been made to create public awareness about filth in the municipality but the education was not making the necessary impact.

Nana Acquah said very soon anyone who littered the environment would be arrested by the sanitation police in the town and prosecuted.

Madam Faustina Akosua Amuzu, Chief Executive Officer of Aya-Green Ventures, a non-governmental organization, who launched the programme advised the people to ensure environmental cleanliness and personal hygiene at all times.

Mr Siaw Adjapong, Head of the Plastic Waste Management Programme, later distributed about 250 waste polythene bags to the people for collection and segregation of wastes to promote environmental cleanliness in the area.
