Member of Parliament (MP) for Yilo Krobo in the Eastern Region, Albert Tetteh Nyakotey, has taken a decisive step towards addressing the pressing sanitation needs of the area.

The legislator has identified the situation as one of the direst needs of the people.

The MP made the observation after commissioning a 12-seater toilet facility for the people of Plau.

With only one dilapidated public place of convenience serving the people of the area, he explained that the need to put up the facility arose out of the necessity to complement the use of the only toilet serving the populace.

The construction of the facility with parts of the MP’s Common Fund and support from other stakeholders was the MP’s first project after assuming the position in 2021.

The toilet, according to Mr. Nyakotey, will serve users free of charge until further notice, stressing that the people are entitled to the use of clean and decent places of convenience.

“Sanitation is very important. People are entitled to clean toilet facilities,” he said.

Bemoaning the poor sanitation situation in the constituency, Mr. Nyakotey chided the Akufo-Addo government for failing to improve the situation in the Yilo Krobo area since it assumed government.

“The situation is not good; I know certainly that over the past seven years, this NPP government has not constructed a single public toilet in Yilo,” said the MP.

To address the situation, he mentioned that other interventions were ongoing in other parts of the constituency to enhance the sanitation situation in the area.

He assured that he would do more to improve the distressing condition if the NDC government is voted into power in the December elections.

The legislator, however, advised the people to ensure proper maintenance of the facility to ensure that it lasts, assuring that he would continue to contribute his support towards the running and maintenance of the toilet.

Asafoatse Dika, who represented the divisional chief of the area, applauded the efforts of the lawmaker but urged the people to ensure that the new facility lasts long enough to serve its purpose.

He also appealed to Mr. Nyakotey to facilitate the supply of pipe-borne water to the community to serve the needs of the residents.

Promises to address rural telephony challenges:

The MP also identified rural telephony as a critical need of the people, especially in rural areas, and promised to facilitate its installation within the first two years if the NDC is voted back into power.
