Yilo and Manya Krobo welcome E/R University

The people of Yilo and Manya Krobo have massively welcomed the intention of government to site the proposed Eastern Region University on their lands.

Nene Odorkor Tuumeh, the acting Paramount Chief of Yilo Krobo Traditional Area and Nene Sakite II, Konor of Manya Krobo, said this on Tuesday during the tour of Ms Helen Adjoa Ntoso, the Regional Minister and her Deputy, Ms Mavis Amma Frimpong.

According to the paramount chiefs, they had readily available some temporal lecture hall blocks situated on the Yilo Krobo and Krobo Girls Senior High Schools respectively for the commencement of the university.

Besides, both the Yilo Krobo and the Manya Krobo Traditional Councils have made available 500 and 200 acre parcels of land respectively to be given to the government for the construction of the project.

Speaking at a small durbar to welcome the minister, Nene Odorkor Tuumeh said the allocation of the stool land was to show the appreciation of the people of Somanya to government for declaring its intention to choose a site for the university in the area.

He said Dr Kwame Nkrumah had planned to establish a University of Agriculture in the area but that did not materialize due to the 1966 coup and praised government for revisiting that dream by choosing to locate the regional university in the area.

He pledged the support and cooperation of both traditional councils to government and the university committee to ensure that the establishment of the university becomes a reality.

Nene Odorkor Tuumeh used the occasion to appeal to Ghanaians to maintain the peaceful atmosphere being enjoyed “so that Ghana will be a better place for us all.”

Ms Ntoso, on her part, also urged the people of Krobo to show commitment to the university project and appealed that they do not resort to violence to mar the existing peace in the society.
